Working with our long time clients Warner Music and one of our favourite artists, Type40 created a new video for the Terry Britten 2023 rework of the song Something Beautiful
The concept was to use the original video as a starting point, but to create something new from the hours of rushes in the Warner Music archive.
It’s not often you get to create a new video from the original rushes, but that was the job Type40 was tasked with to accompany the Tina Turner anthology release ‘Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll’. Over the years we’ve worked one a number of Tina DVDs and blu-rays for Warner and have restored many of her iconic live performance and music video. To be given the opportunity to edit a new video from the rushes of the original 1996 video was a dream come true.
From the archive to the edit suite
Although shot on film, the tapes available were high quality standard definition D-1 telecine transfers of all the original rushes. These were transferred from the tapes to uncompressed files, which were then loaded into one of our edit suites. We decided to start by rebuilding parts of the previous promo which worked well, while also looking to add our own spin on the new edit. One of the most important parts of this was to focus almost exclusively on Tina herself. The song itself covers the legacy left after someone is now longer here, a fitting lyrical tribute to Tina herself. In the previous 1996 edit there was b-roll footage shot in around the town, mostly used in black and white and it was decided to exclude this footage, going exclusively for the film of Tina performing the song and the breath taking backdrop which accompanies her.
The edit itself took about a week, with further time needed for restoration and other post production, but the end result is a stunning tribute to the Queen of Rock and Roll. The video was a pivotal part of the marketing assets used of the albums launch and was well received by the loyal Tina fans.
Let the footage do the talking
With a project like this it’s easy to let the footage do all the work. The locations chosen and how stunning Tina looks throughout the whole shoot made the edit an easy job to do. Some lens flairs and film burn were added to further create a timeless feel, but it’s the original shoot that gave us all the footage we needed to make the new version something special. Having worked on a series of similar projects over the years we can honestly say this is one of our favourites we’ve been fortunate enough to have a hand in working on and with it’s release Something Beautiful remains as the perfect tribute to Tina Turner.
