Imagine – The Ultimate Collection was the first in a series of projects Type40 has worked on for the John Lennon Estate and Universal Music.  Imagine itself is one of the most famous albums by John Lennon and in 2018 the album was re-released in a new box set featuring remixes and previously unrealised content. The album was remixed by Grammy award winning engineer Paul Hicks in 5.1 surround sound and stereo at 96kHz/24bit, making it ripe for a physical release on a format that can handle high resolution audio.

Video Post Production: From Theatrical Trailers to The Heart of New York City

Type40 was originally tasked with producing the two blu-ray discs to be included in the box set, but the initial menus designs struck a cord with our clients and would soon form the visual look of the whole campaign for any motion assets required.  From producing the theatrical trailers for the re-release of the accompanying film, Imagine, to creating product videos for the illustrious screens in Time Square, Type40 worked along side both Universal and the Estate to produce a range of content to help spread the word about this exciting new release. 

Our work on the project would also include pseudo promo videos for tracks from the album for Youtube, animated bus stop posters and traditional print material used across the world to promote the box set. We would also design and author the blu-ray for the Imagine film itself and its behind the scenes companion documentary Gimme Some Truth, which would be released separately along side The Ultimate Collection box set.

High Definition Pure Audio Blu-ray: the best you’ll ever hear an album

With the rise in analogue album masters being transferred at higher resolutions, blu-ray is the perfect format for releasing them so that fans can hear them as good as they can ever sound.  Type40 has been working on blu-ray discs since our 2005 and has authored a large number of audio only releases for various labels and artists across the music industry.  We love taking an album and finding a way to present it to an audience, while designing all menus in keeping with the original artwork.

For Imagine – The Ultimate Collection the amount of content and the higher resolution of the audio meant it was necessary for us to author two discs, with both featuring the same look and feel to make them feel part of a bigger whole.

Blu-ray & DVD Authoring: Imagine and Gimme Some Truth

Alongside the box set collection the original 1971 film Imagine was re-released in cinemas, with a physical release on blu-ray and DVD following not long after . With an eye on creating a premium viewing experience, the discs included the film in both stereo and 5.1 surround sound. Our services also covered essential technical details, from frame rate conversions to custom video encoding using our range of video encoding software.

We also took care of the intricate process of menu design, creating user-friendly, visually engaging DVD and blu-ray menus that matched the branding of The Ultimate Collection. Each release gave audiences a high-quality viewing experience that could be revisited time and again.

Branding and Design: The Foundation of The Ultimate Collection Project

Taking our inspiration from the original Imagine album cover and working closely with project director Simon Hilton, we implemented a series of moving clouds and a font style taking the aesthetic of the original, but bringing it up-to-date.  Fonts were matched exactly to those used on the original, including spending time on the kerning for individual letters.  It was also important that the visuals didn’t feel too old or distressed and while our initial designs featured grain and dirt this was quickly removed to keep the design really clean.  From there, we designed cohesive visual assets and brand guidelines that provided a foundation for all marketing materials.

Our approach ensured that every touchpoint, from videos to physical media and youtube content, maintained a unified brand voice. By capturing the original Imagine’s spirit we created a series of memorable videos used for marketing this special release.
